Usability Test Plan skill for Claude and Codex
Usability Test Plan as an AI skill. It asks for What is being tested, Key user goals, Participants and 4 more, then does the rest. Free to install in Claude…
Install it once and Claude or Codex runs it for you. When your request matches, your AI loads the skill, asks for anything it is missing, and works through the template itself. Prefer to fill it in by hand? See the full prompt template.

When it is used
Use when a team is about to test a prototype or live feature with real users and needs tasks, success criteria, participants and an observation sheet. Do not use for open-ended discovery interviews or analysing analytics data. Related topics: design, research.
What it will ask you for
- What is being tested (free text, e.g. "Prototype or live feature name")
- Key user goals (longer free text)
- Participants (longer free text)
- Number of participants (number from 3 to 12)
- Test format (choose one: Moderated in person, Moderated remote, Unmoderated remote)
- Session length (free text, e.g. "45 minutes")
- Known concerns (longer free text)
How it works
- Turn each user goal into a scenario task that avoids words used on the interface.
- Define success criteria for every task in advance, including a time or error limit that counts as a problem.
- Specify participant criteria, a short screener and the group mix for the chosen number of sessions.
- Write the moderator script with consent, think-aloud setup, neutral prompts and a rule against helping early.
- Provide the observation sheet and a severity scale, then explain how to merge findings into a ranked issue list.
What you get
A test plan with scenario tasks and success criteria, participant screener, moderator script, an observation sheet table and a method for ranking issues.
What it watches out for
- Naming interface labels in the task, which turns the test into a word-matching exercise.
- Deciding what counts as success after the sessions, which bends results toward the team's hopes.
- Helping a stuck participant too early, which erases the very problem the test exists to find.
How to install
Claude.ai and the Claude desktop app
- Download the skill .zip.
- Open Settings, then Capabilities, and find Skills.
- Choose Upload skill and select the .zip.
- Ask Claude for help with the task. It loads the skill when your request matches.
Claude Code
- Download the skill .zip.
- Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ (or .claude/skills/ inside a project).
- Start a new session. Claude Code loads the skill when your request matches.
Codex
- Download the skill .zip.
- Unzip it into ~/.agents/skills/ (or .agents/skills/ inside a project).
- Codex picks it up on its own. Type $ and the skill name to use it, or just ask for the task.
Cursor
- Download the Cursor rule (.mdc).
- Save it in .cursor/rules/ inside your project.
- Cursor's agent applies the rule when your request matches its description.
AGENTS.md (Codex, Cursor, and other coding agents)
- Copy the AGENTS.md section.
- Paste it into AGENTS.md at the root of your repository, creating the file if needed.
- Coding agents that read AGENTS.md follow it when your request fits.
