Logging and Observability Review skill for Claude and Codex
Logging and Observability Review as an AI skill. It asks for Service description, Sample log lines, Current metrics and alerts and 3 more, then does the rest.…
Install it once and Claude or Codex runs it for you. When your request matches, your AI loads the skill, asks for anything it is missing, and works through the template itself. Prefer to fill it in by hand? See the full prompt template.

When it is used
Use when a service's logs are noisy or unhelpful during incidents and its metrics and alerts need reviewing for levels, fields and coverage. Do not use for choosing a monitoring vendor or debugging one specific outage. Related topics: devops, coding.
What it will ask you for
- Service description (longer free text)
- Sample log lines (longer free text)
- Current metrics and alerts (longer free text)
- Logging stack (free text, e.g. "Datadog or Cloud Logging or ELK")
- Typical incident (longer free text)
- Traffic level (choose one: Low, Medium, High, Very high)
How it works
- Grade each sample log line on level, message stability and structured fields, and flag any that leak personal data or secrets.
- List the events that are missing, including request boundaries, dependency calls, retries and state changes.
- Propose metrics for latency, traffic, errors and saturation, with a name and unit for each.
- Write one alert per symptom with a threshold, a window and the action expected from the responder.
- Rank all changes by value and effort, and name the dashboard panels to build first.
What you get
A graded table of log findings, a list of missing events, a metrics and alerts table with thresholds and actions, and a ranked change list with first dashboard panels.
What it watches out for
- Alerting on every error log, which trains the on-call to ignore pages.
- Logging full request bodies for debugging, which stores personal data and secrets in a searchable system.
- Adding fields with unbounded values as metric labels, which makes the metrics bill and the database explode.
How to install
Claude.ai and the Claude desktop app
- Download the skill .zip.
- Open Settings, then Capabilities, and find Skills.
- Choose Upload skill and select the .zip.
- Ask Claude for help with the task. It loads the skill when your request matches.
Claude Code
- Download the skill .zip.
- Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ (or .claude/skills/ inside a project).
- Start a new session. Claude Code loads the skill when your request matches.
Codex
- Download the skill .zip.
- Unzip it into ~/.agents/skills/ (or .agents/skills/ inside a project).
- Codex picks it up on its own. Type $ and the skill name to use it, or just ask for the task.
Cursor
- Download the Cursor rule (.mdc).
- Save it in .cursor/rules/ inside your project.
- Cursor's agent applies the rule when your request matches its description.
AGENTS.md (Codex, Cursor, and other coding agents)
- Copy the AGENTS.md section.
- Paste it into AGENTS.md at the root of your repository, creating the file if needed.
- Coding agents that read AGENTS.md follow it when your request fits.
