Dependency Upgrade Plan skill for Claude and Codex
Dependency Upgrade Plan as an AI skill. It asks for Dependencies and versions, Project type, Test coverage and 3 more, then does the rest. Free to install in…
Install it once and Claude or Codex runs it for you. When your request matches, your AI loads the skill, asks for anything it is missing, and works through the template itself. Prefer to fill it in by hand? See the full prompt template.

When it is used
Use when a project has several outdated packages and needs an ordered upgrade plan with breaking changes and checks per step. Do not use for resolving a single failing install or auditing packages for security issues. Related topics: coding, devops.
What it will ask you for
- Dependencies and versions (longer free text)
- Project type (free text, e.g. "Node API or Flutter app or Django site")
- Test coverage (choose one: Strong, Patchy, Almost none)
- Deployment risk (choose one: Internal tool, Customer facing, Revenue critical)
- Release notes or changelogs (longer free text)
- Time available (free text, e.g. "One afternoon or two sprints")
How it works
- Group the packages by how they depend on each other and mark which are runtime, build or leaf packages.
- Order the upgrades with foundations first and patch or minor bumps before majors, and justify any exception.
- List the breaking changes for each major from the supplied notes and flag every claim that still needs verifying.
- Define the checks after each step and the rollback point, matching the strength of the checks to the test coverage.
- Split the work into pull requests by risk and name the first three actions to take today.
What you get
An ordered table of upgrade steps with packages, breaking changes, code areas affected, checks and rollback point, followed by a pull request grouping and the first three actions.
What it watches out for
- Upgrading everything at once, so a failing build cannot be traced to one package.
- Trusting remembered changelogs for a major version, which may be wrong or outdated for the exact target.
- Skipping the runtime or compiler version, which quietly blocks the later package upgrades.
How to install
Claude.ai and the Claude desktop app
- Download the skill .zip.
- Open Settings, then Capabilities, and find Skills.
- Choose Upload skill and select the .zip.
- Ask Claude for help with the task. It loads the skill when your request matches.
Claude Code
- Download the skill .zip.
- Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ (or .claude/skills/ inside a project).
- Start a new session. Claude Code loads the skill when your request matches.
Codex
- Download the skill .zip.
- Unzip it into ~/.agents/skills/ (or .agents/skills/ inside a project).
- Codex picks it up on its own. Type $ and the skill name to use it, or just ask for the task.
Cursor
- Download the Cursor rule (.mdc).
- Save it in .cursor/rules/ inside your project.
- Cursor's agent applies the rule when your request matches its description.
AGENTS.md (Codex, Cursor, and other coding agents)
- Copy the AGENTS.md section.
- Paste it into AGENTS.md at the root of your repository, creating the file if needed.
- Coding agents that read AGENTS.md follow it when your request fits.
