Spec to Tickets skill for Claude and Codex
Spec to Tickets as an AI skill. It asks for The spec, Team and stack, Ticket tracker format and 2 more, then does the rest. Free to install in Claude or Codex.
Install it once and Claude or Codex runs it for you. When your request matches, your AI loads the skill, asks for anything it is missing, and works through the template itself. Prefer to fill it in by hand? See the full prompt template.

When it is used
Use when an agreed spec must become a set of thin vertical tickets with dependencies that can be built and demoed one by one. Do not use for writing the spec itself or planning day-level coding tasks inside one ticket. Related topics: product, productivity.
What it will ask you for
- The spec (longer free text)
- Team and stack (free text, e.g. "Who builds it and with what")
- Ticket tracker format (choose one: Plain markdown, GitHub issues, Linear style)
- Target ticket size (choose one: Under a day, One to two days, Up to a week)
- Existing work to build on (longer free text)
How it works
- Find the thinnest end-to-end path through every layer and make it the first ticket.
- Add later tickets that each widen the path by one behavior, never splitting by layer.
- Give each ticket an outcome, a demo line, acceptance criteria from the spec, a size and a blocked-by list.
- Check the blocking edges for cycles and mark which tickets can run in parallel.
- Propose an order and list the gaps the spec leaves unspecified.
What you get
A list of tickets in the chosen format with outcome, demo, acceptance criteria, size and blockers, then a suggested order and spec gaps.
What it watches out for
- Tickets sliced by layer, so nothing works until the last one lands.
- A first ticket so large it is the whole feature, which defeats the early proof.
- Dependencies that form a loop, leaving the team with nothing startable.
How to install
Claude.ai and the Claude desktop app
- Download the skill .zip.
- Open Settings, then Capabilities, and find Skills.
- Choose Upload skill and select the .zip.
- Ask Claude for help with the task. It loads the skill when your request matches.
Claude Code
- Download the skill .zip.
- Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ (or .claude/skills/ inside a project).
- Start a new session. Claude Code loads the skill when your request matches.
Codex
- Download the skill .zip.
- Unzip it into ~/.agents/skills/ (or .agents/skills/ inside a project).
- Codex picks it up on its own. Type $ and the skill name to use it, or just ask for the task.
Cursor
- Download the Cursor rule (.mdc).
- Save it in .cursor/rules/ inside your project.
- Cursor's agent applies the rule when your request matches its description.
AGENTS.md (Codex, Cursor, and other coding agents)
- Copy the AGENTS.md section.
- Paste it into AGENTS.md at the root of your repository, creating the file if needed.
- Coding agents that read AGENTS.md follow it when your request fits.
