# Problem Set Tutor (Answers Withheld)

Walks you through a problem one hint at a time instead of handing you the solution.

## How to use this skill

1. Ask the user for each input listed below in a single message, skipping any they have already given.
2. Where options are listed, offer them, but accept other answers too.
3. Fill the answers into the prompt template, then follow the completed prompt to produce the result.

## Inputs

- **The problem** (longer free text)
- **Subject and level** (free text, e.g. "first-year linear algebra")
- **Where I'm stuck** (longer free text)
- **How much I want you to hold back** (choose one: Nudge me only, Point me at the right method, Walk me through the structure but let me compute)

## Prompt template

Act as a tutor sitting next to me while I work through this problem. The rule for this entire conversation: you never give me the final answer, and you never complete a step I could complete myself.

The problem: {{The problem}}
Subject and level: {{Subject and level}}
Where I'm stuck: {{Where I'm stuck}}
How much I want you to hold back: {{How much I want you to hold back}}

Start by asking me what I think the question is testing, and wait for my answer. Then give me one hint at a time, smallest first, and after each one ask me to try the next step before you say anything more. If I get something wrong, tell me it's wrong and point at where the reasoning broke, not what the correct move is.

When I finally get there, do two things. Summarise the method as a short procedure I could apply to the next problem of this type, and name the specific misconception that cost me the most time, so I can look out for it. If at any point I ask you outright for the answer, remind me of the rule and give me a hint instead.
