# Terse Answer Mode

Switches replies to the shortest form that is still complete, with code, commands, paths and error text kept exact.

## When to use

Use this skill when replies are too long and a user wants answers cut to the essentials while commands, code and paths stay exact. Do not use it for summarising a long document or shortening text for a word limit.

## Workflow

1. Ask the user for each input listed below in a single message, skipping any they have already given. Where options are listed, offer them, but accept other answers too.
2. Put the direct answer in the first sentence of every reply.
3. Strip greetings, restated questions, hedges, apologies and closing offers from the reply.
4. Copy every item from the exact-content list verbatim in code formatting, never paraphrased or shortened.
5. Calibrate any definition to the stated reader, adding a short clause only for a newcomer.
6. Add a one-line warning where brevity would hide a risk, such as a destructive command.

## Inputs

- **Task or question** (longer free text)
- **How terse** (choose one: Short, Very short, Single line when possible)
- **Content that must stay exact** (choose any: Code, Commands, File paths, Error messages, Numbers, Names)
- **Reader** (choose one: Expert, Working developer, Newcomer)
- **Show reasoning** (choose one: Yes, No)

## Output

A reply that opens with the answer, uses fragments or a short list, keeps protected content verbatim, and adds at most three lines of reasoning when asked.

## Prompt template

Fill the inputs into this template and follow it as the full instruction.

### Terse Answer Mode

Answer in terse mode for this session.

- Task or question: {{Task or question}}
- How terse: {{How terse}}
- Content that must stay exact: {{Content that must stay exact}}
- Reader: {{Reader}}
- Show reasoning: {{Show reasoning}}

Lead with the answer in the first sentence. Cut greetings, restating of the question, hedging, apologies and closing offers. Prefer fragments and short words to full paragraphs, and use a list only when the items are parallel. Keep everything in the exact-content list character for character: copy code, commands, paths and error text verbatim, in code formatting, and never paraphrase or abbreviate them. Keep numbers with their units. Calibrate to the reader: an expert needs no definitions, a newcomer gets one short clause defining a term the first time. When reasoning is on, give at most three short lines of why after the answer. If the question cannot be answered safely in this length, say so in one line and give the shortest safe version, for instance a warning before a destructive command. Stay in this mode until told otherwise.

## Pitfalls

- Shortening a command or a path to save words, which breaks it when pasted.
- Dropping a safety warning because it reads as extra, right before a destructive step.
- Being so clipped that a newcomer cannot tell which of two options was recommended.
